Advent Celebrates 10 Years of Reshaping the IP Business Model

Advent, LLP is proud to celebrate its 10th Anniversary serving in the Omaha area and across the country. The firm was founded in the summer of 2010 with a clear vision in mind: to reshape the traditional law firm model in order to bring a personalized service that would adapt to the needs of their clients and employees alike. For this reason, the Advent business model eliminated the billable hour as the measure of value. 10 years later, Advent is thriving by delivering value to its clients based on their unique strategic needs.

Ryan Grace and Kevin West, founding partners of the firm, sat down to reminisce about the last ten years working together and how the intellectual property panorama had changed. West said, “I still remember the booth at Vidlak’s Café where we met for breakfast and discussed our ideas for the new firm. We wanted Advent to be the beginning of something very different.” This idea of a new way of approaching Intellectual property and innovation was also the inspiration behind the company’s name. Whereas most law firms are named after their partners, Grace and West believed that “to have our names as the names of the firm did not transmit who we are and what we want to accomplish.”

When Advent was founded ten years ago, the whole system was built from the ground up. Ryan developed a proprietary software that enabled the firm to get rid of the billable hour and acquire unique partnerships with its clients. Remembering the firm’s beginnings, Kevin pointed out how crucial their client relationships had been, “We want to thank our clients for believing in us and being with us since the start of the firm. We would not be here without their faith in us. We were a couple of patent attorneys starting their own practice in the middle of the United States, Omaha, just coming out of a recession. Our clients stuck with us.”

When asked about their expectations for the next ten years, Ryan and Kevin fully agree on one thing: The continuous and organic growth of the firm will not compromise the model and the company’s culture. Grace explained why it is so important for the company’s system to be flexible not only to the clients but everyone working at Advent alike: “Our employees are the life and blood of Advent, their talents, trust and loyalty are what makes Advent so special. We would not change the model that allows them to have the freedom to work and grow at their own pace. Our system’s flexibility adapts to the different lives and lifestyle of our employees, not the other way around” Like he said, Advent was, and remains being after 10 years, “the beginning of something very different, healthy, and empowering.”
